Problem

One end of a copper rod of length 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} and cross-sectional area 1.0 cm21.0\,\text{cm}^2 is maintained at 150 ∘C150\,^{\circ}\text{C} while the other end is kept at 50 ∘C50\,^{\circ}\text{C}. The thermal conductivity of copper is 385 W m−1 K−1385\,\text{W}\,\text{m}^{-1}\,\text{K}^{-1}. Neglect any heat loss from the curved surface of the rod. (i) Calculate the rate at which heat is conducted through the rod. (ii) Suppose the rod is placed inside an evacuated glass tube while the end temperatures are kept unchanged. Will the rate of heat transfer between the two ends of the rod change? Give a reason based on the dominant mode of heat transfer in this situation.
