Problem

At standard temperature and pressure (STP), one mole of an ideal gas occupies a characteristic volume that is often quoted in data tables. Using only the information given below, answer the questions that follow. Standard temperature = 273 K Standard pressure = 1.013 × 10^5 Pa (i) State the mathematical form of the ideal gas equation relating pressure, volume, temperature and amount of substance. (ii) Starting from the equation stated in part (i), obtain an expression for the molar volume of an ideal gas at STP. (iii) Calculate the numerical value of the molar volume at STP in both m³ and L. Give each value correct to three significant figures. (iv) Comment briefly (in not more than two sentences) on why this value is useful in laboratory calculations involving gases.
