Problem

A swimmer starts from the origin O(0,0)O(0,0) of a rectangular swimming pool and reaches the springboard located at P(12 m, 5 m)P(12\,\text{m},\,5\,\text{m}). (a) Find the components of the displacement vector OP→\overrightarrow{OP}. (b) Calculate the magnitude of this displacement and express it correct to one decimal place. (c) Determine the angle that OP→\overrightarrow{OP} makes with the positive x–axis, giving the answer in degrees correct to the nearest whole number. (d) If the swimmer had instead first reached the point Q(12 m,0)Q(12\,\text{m},0) and then moved to PP, compute the total distance covered and compare it with the magnitude found in part (b).
