Problem

From point A on level ground the angle of elevation of the top of a vertical tower is 30°. After a student walks 150 m straight towards the tower to point B, the angle of elevation of the top becomes 60°. Assume that A, B and the foot of the tower lie on the same straight line. Answer the following. (i) If the distance of point B from the foot of the tower is xx metres, write an expression for the height of the tower in terms of xx using the observation made at B. (ii) Using the observation made at A, obtain a second equation in xx and hence find the value of xx. (iii) Calculate the height of the tower correct to one decimal place.
