Problem

Sphere A of mass 0.30 kg0.30\,\text{kg} is moving with velocity 4 m s−14\,\text{m s}^{-1} along the positive xx–axis on a smooth horizontal table. Sphere B of mass 0.40 kg0.40\,\text{kg} is simultaneously moving with velocity 3 m s−13\,\text{m s}^{-1} along the positive yy–axis. They collide when the line of centres is along the xx–axis. The coefficient of restitution is 0.80.8. (i) Find the xx–component of velocity of each sphere just after the collision. (ii) Calculate the loss of kinetic energy in the collision.
