Problem

A laboratory technician slowly heats a cavity radiator that behaves nearly like an ideal blackbody. At first the radiator is at a temperature TT and the wavelength corresponding to maximum energy emission is λ1\lambda_1. After some time the temperature reaches 3T2\frac{3T}{2}. Answer the following in brief but clearly reasoned paragraphs. (i) State the relation that connects the peak wavelength of emission of a perfect blackbody with its absolute temperature. (ii) Explain, without substituting numerical values, how the peak wavelength will change when the temperature rises from TT to 3T2\frac{3T}{2}. (iii) If the initial peak lies in the near-infra-red region at 960 nm960\,\text{nm}, identify qualitatively the part of the electromagnetic spectrum (infra-red, visible, or ultraviolet) in which the new peak will lie. Justify your answer.
