Problem

A 2 kg2\,\text{kg} block and an 8 kg8\,\text{kg} block are connected by a light, inextensible string over a friction-less pulley. The 8 kg8\,\text{kg} block is initially at the lower position. The system is released from rest. (i) Calculate the acceleration of the system and the tension in the string. Take g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (ii) The positions of the two blocks are now interchanged without altering any other condition, and the system is again released from rest. Determine the new values of acceleration and tension. (iii) Comment on the significance of the sign (direction) of the acceleration obtained in part (ii) with respect to your initial choice of positive direction.
