Problem

Oil (density 0.75 ρwater0.75\,\rho_{\text{water}}) forms a layer 4 cm thick on top of water in a container. A small solid sphere has a density equal to 0.90 ρwater0.90\,\rho_{\text{water}}. The sphere is gently released from rest at the oil–air interface. Describe the sphere’s final equilibrium position relative to the oil–water interface, and justify your answer.
