Problem

A small metal ball is tied to a 1.5 m1.5\,\text{m} long string and is whirled anti-clockwise in a horizontal circle at a constant speed of 4.0 m/s4.0\,\text{m/s}. The ball starts from the point that lies due east of the centre. (i) Calculate the length of the arc travelled by the ball in the first 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s}. (ii) Determine the angle (in radians) through which the ball has moved during this time. (iii) Using your answer to part (ii), state the new position of the ball relative to the centre of the circle (for example, "north-east", "north", etc.). (iv) At that instant the string suddenly snaps. State and explain the direction in which the ball will move immediately after the string breaks.
