Problem

Let a\mathbf{a} and b\mathbf{b} be two non–zero vectors. (i) Write the geometric definition of the scalar (dot) product of a\mathbf{a} and b\mathbf{b}. (ii) Using this definition, explain why the condition a⋅b=0\mathbf{a}\cdot\mathbf{b}=0 is equivalent to the angle between a\mathbf{a} and b\mathbf{b} being 90∘90^{\circ}. (iii) If ∣a∣=5,  ∣b∣=7|\mathbf{a}|=5,\;|\mathbf{b}|=7 and a⋅b=0\mathbf{a}\cdot\mathbf{b}=0, state whether a\mathbf{a} and b\mathbf{b} can be parallel. Give a brief reason for your answer.
