Problem

Consider an electrical current, II, flowing through a resistor of resistance, RR, because there is a potential difference, VV, across the component. (a) For each Coulomb of charge that flows through the resistor, how many Joules of electrical energy are transferred to thermal energy to increase the temperature of the resistor? (b) In 1 s, how many Coulombs of charge flow past any given point in the resistor? (c) So, write an expression for how many Joules of electrical energy are transformed into thermal energy every second in the resistor. (d) Hence, show that the power generated in the resistor can be written as - i P=I2RP = I^2R . - ii P=V2RP = \frac{V^2}{R} .
