Problem

A hammer head of mass 1.5 kg is moving vertically downward with a speed of 3 m/s just before it strikes the head of a nail fixed in a plank of wood. (a) Calculate the kinetic energy of the hammer head immediately before impact. (b) The nail is driven 4.0 mm into the wood in one blow. Assuming all the kinetic energy of the hammer head is used to overcome a constant resisting force offered by the wood, determine the magnitude of this force. (c) If the hammer head were made to strike the nail with a speed of 6 m/s instead of 3 m/s, estimate how the penetration depth would change, assuming the resisting force of the wood remains the same.
