Problem
A block of mass 2.0kg rests on a horizontal surface. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface is 0.20. A constant horizontal force of 10N is applied to the block for 4.0s, starting from rest, after which the force is removed.
(a) Compute the acceleration of the block while the force is acting and find its speed at the instant the force is removed.
(b) Calculate the distance moved by the block during the 4.0s interval when the force acts.
(c) After the force is removed, the block continues to slide until it comes to rest due to friction alone. Determine the additional distance it travels during this phase.
(d) Find the total work done by the applied 10N force on the block from the start until the block finally comes to rest.
