Problem

A spring balance is calibrated on Earth to read directly in newtons. At a place where the acceleration due to gravity is g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2} it records a steady reading of 39.2 N39.2\,\text{N} when an object is suspended from it. (i) Calculate the mass of the object. (ii) The same balance is taken to the Moon where the value of gg is 1.63 m s−21.63\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. What reading will the balance show for the same object? (iii) If a beam balance were used instead of the spring balance on the Moon, what mass would it indicate for the object? Briefly justify your answer.
