Problem

Three identical X-ray photons, each of the same initial wavelength, are individually directed toward three separate free electrons that are initially at rest. After each collision, the scattered photon emerges at one of the following angles measured from its original direction: 25∘25^\circ, 75∘75^\circ, and 135∘135^\circ. Assume no other interactions occur and that the electrons may be treated as free and initially stationary. (1) Part 1: (a) Rank the three scattering events according to the magnitude of the photon’s wavelength shift, Δλ\Delta\lambda, from smallest to largest. Clearly indicate any ties. (2) Part 2: (b) Rank the three events according to the energy of the scattered photon, from greatest to least. Clearly indicate any ties. (3) Part 3: (c) Provide a qualitative explanation that supports both of your rankings in parts (a) and (b), citing the relevant angular dependence without performing any explicit calculations.
