Problem

A boy standing in a stationary boat on a calm lake jumps towards the shore. What happens to the boat and why? (a) The boat remains at rest because the internal forces between boy and boat cancel each other. (b) The boat moves slightly forward along with the boy because friction between his shoes and the deck pulls it that way. (c) The boat moves backward because the boy exerts a backward force on it while jumping. (d) The boat sinks a little but hardly shifts horizontally because action–reaction acts only in the vertical direction.
