Problem

(Series combination of two reversible engines) Two identical reversible engines AA and BB are arranged in series. Engine AA operates between a hot reservoir at temperature THT_H and an intermediate reservoir at temperature TT. Engine BB operates between the same intermediate reservoir at TT and a cold reservoir at temperature TCT_C. (i) For each engine, write an expression for its efficiency in terms of the appropriate reservoir temperatures. (ii) Show, by eliminating the intermediate temperature TT, that the combined efficiency of engines AA and BB equals the efficiency of a single reversible engine working directly between THT_H and TCT_C. (iii) Engine AA absorbs heat QHQ_H from the hot reservoir and produces work WAW_A. Engine BB receives the heat rejected by AA and produces work WBW_B. Derive a relation for the value of TT in terms of THT_H and TCT_C for which WA=WBW_A = W_B.
