Problem

Two rigid containers each hold 2.00 mol of an ideal noble gas. Container A contains argon at 300 K, while Container B contains krypton at 600 K. The molar masses are 39.9 g mol⁻¹ for argon and 83.8 g mol⁻¹ for krypton. (a) Determine the ratio of the average kinetic energy per particle in Container B to that in Container A. (b) Calculate the ratio of the root-mean-square speeds, vrms,Bvrms,A\dfrac{v_{\text{rms,B}}}{v_{\text{rms,A}}}, of gas particles in the two containers. Show all algebraic steps and include units in the final ratio. (c) Interpret your results from parts (a) and (b) to explain why krypton atoms in Container B can have a higher average kinetic energy yet a lower root-mean-square speed than argon atoms in Container A.
