Problem

A series circuit contains an inductance L=40 mHL = 40\,\text{mH}, a capacitance C=50 μFC = 50\,\mu\text{F} and a resistance R=20 ΩR = 20\,\Omega. It is connected across an adjustable–frequency sinusoidal source that maintains a constant rms voltage of 100 V100\,\text{V}. Answer the following: (i) Starting with Z=R2+(ωL−1/ωC)2Z = \sqrt{R^{2} + (\omega L - 1/\omega C)^{2}}, derive an expression for the angular frequency at which the circuit current attains its maximum value. (ii) Calculate the numerical value of this frequency (in Hz) for the data given. (iii) Determine the peak current as well as the rms current that flow through the circuit at the frequency obtained in part (ii). (iv) Compute the average power supplied by the source at that frequency.
