Problem

Consider a dipole of moment magnitude pp kept in a uniform electric field of magnitude EE. (i) Starting from the definition of work, derive an expression for the work done by an external agent in rotating the dipole slowly and without acceleration from an initial angle θ1\theta_1 to a final angle θ2\theta_2 with respect to the field direction. (ii) A dipole with p=1.5×10−25 C mp = 1.5\times10^{-25}\,\text{C}\,\text{m} is initially perpendicular to a uniform electric field of magnitude 4.0×104 N C−14.0\times10^{4}\,\text{N}\,\text{C}^{-1}. Calculate the work required to rotate it to make an angle of 30∘30^{\circ} with the field. (iii) State whether the work calculated in part (ii) has been done against or by the field. Justify your answer.
