Problem

A particle of mass mm is acted upon by a force at a point PP whose position vector with respect to the origin OO is r\mathbf r. (i) Define the physical quantity "torque" about the origin produced by the force. (ii) Describe, with the aid of the right-hand rule, how the sense (direction) of this torque vector is decided. (iii) Prove that the magnitude of the torque is given by τ=rFsin⁡θ\tau = rF\sin\theta, where θ\theta is the angle between r\mathbf r and the force vector F\mathbf F. State clearly the geometrical meaning of sin⁡θ\sin\theta that appears in this relation.
