Problem

A fireworks shell is launched from the edge of a riverbank that is 12 m12\,\text{m} above the water. The shell travels through the air and explodes at the same vertical height of 12 m12\,\text{m} above the water directly across the river. Launch angle is 55∘55^{\circ} above the horizontal and the initial speed is 32 m/s32\,\text{m/s}. Neglect air resistance. (a) Determine the time interval between launch and explosion. (b) Calculate the horizontal distance the shell travels before exploding. Interpret this distance as the width of the river. (c) Compute the maximum height the shell reaches above the water during its flight. (d) Midway across the river (horizontally), a tree of height 40 m40\,\text{m} stands on a small island. Determine whether the shell clears the top of the tree. Show all reasoning.
