Problem

A pair of identical circular metal plates, each of diameter 12 cm12\,\text{cm}, forms an air capacitor whose required capacitance is 50 pF50\,\text{pF}. Use ε0=8.85×10−12 C2 N−1 m−2\varepsilon_0 = 8.85 \times 10^{-12}\,\text{C}^2\,\text{N}^{-1}\,\text{m}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the maximum plate separation that will give the desired capacitance. (ii) A mica sheet of relative permittivity 5.05.0 completely fills the space between the plates while the separation found in part (i) is maintained. Determine the new capacitance of the capacitor.
