Problem

Three conductors P, Q and R are tested twice, each time by applying a different potential difference and measuring the current obtained. Set 1 : P (3 V, 0.6 A), Q (3 V, 0.5 A), R (3 V, 0.4 A) Set 2 : P (6 V, 1.2 A), Q (6 V, 1.6 A), R (6 V, 0.8 A) Answer the questions that follow. (i) For each conductor, calculate the resistance from the data of Set 1 and Set 2 separately. (ii) On the basis of your calculations, identify which conductor(s) obey Ohm’s law most closely. Give a reason. (iii) Using the Set 1 readings, arrange P, Q and R in decreasing order of resistance. (iv) Assuming conductor R continues to behave in the same manner, determine the current that would flow through it when the potential difference is raised to 9 V.
