Problem

A parcel weighing 600 N600\,N at sea level is to be lifted to a mountain rest-house where its weight will decrease by exactly 1 1\,%. Take R=6.4×106 mR=6.4\times10^{6}\,m and g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2} at sea level. (a) Obtain the relation connecting the required height HH and the desired percentage change in weight, assuming H≪RH\ll R. (b) Calculate the height HH (in metres) to the nearest whole number. (c) If the parcel is instead raised by this height in two equal stages, explain whether the final percentage change in weight will remain 1 1\,% or differ, and justify your answer quantitatively.
