Problem

Consider two polynomials P(x)P(x) and Q(x)Q(x) of degrees mm and nn respectively, where m,n≥1m,n\ge 1. (i) State the rule that determines whether lim⁡x→∞P(x)Q(x)\displaystyle\lim_{x\to\infty}\frac{P(x)}{Q(x)} is 00, a finite non-zero constant, or does not exist as a finite real number. (ii) Explain, without performing any numerical substitution, why the limit of 7x5+3x2−14x6−2x+9\dfrac{7x^{5}+3x^{2}-1}{4x^{6}-2x+9} is 00. (iii) Let R(x)=ax3+bx2+1R(x)=ax^{3}+bx^{2}+1 and S(x)=cx3+5x2−4S(x)=cx^{3}+5x^{2}-4. Describe clearly the conditions that aa and cc must satisfy so that lim⁡x→∞R(x)S(x)\displaystyle\lim_{x\to\infty}\frac{R(x)}{S(x)} exists and equals a finite non-zero real number.
