Problem

Sodium chloride (NaCl), glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆), and n-hexane (C₆H₁₄) are introduced separately into identical beakers containing 100 mL of liquid water at 25 °C. (a) Rank the three solutes from greatest to least extent of dissolution in water. (b) For the solute that dissolves to the greatest extent, identify and describe the primary type of interaction between the solute particles and surrounding water molecules. (c) For the solute that dissolves to the least extent, explain why the intermolecular attractions between solute and solvent are insufficient to overcome the attractions within the pure solute. (d) A student claims that glucose will dissociate into ions in water because it contains many oxygen atoms. Evaluate this claim using particulate-level reasoning about bonding and intermolecular forces.
