Problem

A resistor can safely dissipate a maximum of 10 W. It is first connected to a variable voltage source and adjusted so that it just reaches this limit when its resistance is 50 Ω. (a) Determine the maximum current that flows under this safe condition. (b) If the resistor is accidentally replaced by a 25 Ω resistor while the voltage setting from part (a) is left unchanged, calculate the power now dissipated. State whether the 10 W limit is exceeded and by how much.
