Problem

Consider the vectors a=2 i^−j^+3 k^\mathbf{a}=2\,\hat{i}-\hat{j}+3\,\hat{k}, b=4 i^+5 j^−2 k^\mathbf{b}=4\,\hat{i}+5\,\hat{j}-2\,\hat{k}, and c= i^+2 j^+k^\mathbf{c}=\,\hat{i}+2\,\hat{j}+\hat{k}. A parallelogram is to be constructed whose one side is the vector b\mathbf{b} and the adjacent side is a′=a+k c\mathbf{a}'=\mathbf{a}+k\,\mathbf{c}, where kk is a scalar parameter. Answer the following: (a) Obtain an expression for a′×b\mathbf{a}'\times\mathbf{b}, and hence write the area of the parallelogram in terms of kk. Do not evaluate kk at this stage. (b) If the area of the triangle formed by the vectors a′\mathbf{a}' and b\mathbf{b} is exactly 66 square units, determine all admissible value(s) of kk. (Assume kk is real.)
