Problem

Two substances are placed in contact within a perfectly insulated calorimeter until thermal equilibrium is reached. (i) State the principle that governs the heat exchange which takes place inside the calorimeter. (ii) Substance A of mass mAm_A and substance B of mass mBm_B have initial temperatures TAT_A and TBT_B respectively, with TA>TBT_A>T_B. Without performing any numerical calculation, explain why the final equilibrium temperature TfT_f must always satisfy TB<Tf<TAT_B<T_f<T_A. (iii) Qualitatively describe how TfT_f will be affected if the mass of the hotter substance A is doubled while keeping all other quantities the same.
