Problem

A solid sphere of volume 4.0×10−4 m34.0\times10^{-4}\,\text{m}^{3} is tied to the bottom of a tank with a light, inextensible string. The sphere is completely submerged in a liquid of density 800 kg m−3800\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. The true weight of the sphere is 6.0 N6.0\,\text{N}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the upward force exerted on the sphere by the liquid. (ii) Determine the tension in the string. (iii) The liquid in the tank is now replaced by water of density 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3} while keeping the sphere tied and fully submerged. Find the new tension in the string. (iv) Explain the difference between the two tension values obtained.
