Problem

A solid block of mass 5.0 kg5.0\,\text{kg} and volume 0.0060 m30.0060\,\text{m}^3 floats in a liquid of density 900 kg m−3900\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. Consider the same liquid on two different worlds: Earth where g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2} and Planet X where g=3.7 m s−2g=3.7\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the volume of the block that is submerged while floating on Earth. (ii) Determine the volume of the block that would be submerged when it floats in the same liquid on Planet X. (iii) Compare the fractions submerged in the two cases and comment on whether the fraction depends on the value of gravitational acceleration.
