Problem

Assume the Earth to be a sphere of uniform density with radius R=6400 kmR = 6400\,\text{km} and surface acceleration due to gravity g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the depth below the Earth’s surface at which the value of gg becomes exactly one-half of its surface value. (ii) A miner of mass 70 kg70\,\text{kg} is working at that depth. Determine his weight (in newtons) at that location.
