Problem

A solid conducting sphere of radius 0.20 m carries a net charge of +5.0 μC. A separate point charge of +1.0 μC is fixed on the line passing through the center of the sphere at a distance of 0.50 m from the sphere’s center. Point P lies on the same line, 0.40 m from the center of the sphere (between the sphere and the point charge). (a) Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric field at point P due solely to the charged sphere. (b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric field at point P due solely to the external point charge. (c) Using your results from parts (a) and (b), obtain the magnitude and direction of the net electric field at point P. (d) If the external point charge were −1.0 μC instead of +1.0 μC, explain qualitatively (no calculation required) how the magnitude and direction of the net electric field at point P would change.
