Problem

An iron ball is released from rest at the top of a vertical cliff. While falling, it passes a ledge with a speed of 18 m/s18\,\text{m/s}. Ignore air resistance and take g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^2. (i) Calculate the vertical distance between the top of the cliff and the ledge. (ii) How much further must the ball fall from the ledge for its speed to reach 30 m/s30\,\text{m/s}? (iii) If the ball finally strikes the ground with a speed of 40 m/s40\,\text{m/s}, determine the total height of the cliff.
