Problem

Two large plane conducting plates of area AA are placed parallel to each other at a separation dd in vacuum. The plates are given equal and opposite surface charge densities +σ+\sigma and −σ-\sigma. (i) Derive the magnitude and direction of the electric field in the region between the plates in terms of σ\sigma and ε0\varepsilon_0. Ignore the region outside the plates. (ii) Using the result of part (i), obtain an expression for the potential difference VV between the plates in terms of σ\sigma, dd and ε0\varepsilon_0. (iii) Hence show that the capacitance of this arrangement is C=ε0AdC=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d}. Clearly state each step of your reasoning. (iv) If the plate separation is doubled while the charge on each plate remains unchanged, by what factor does the potential difference change? Justify your answer.
