Problem

A straight-line graph is obtained by plotting gravitational force FF on the vertical axis against 1r2\dfrac{1}{r^{2}} on the horizontal axis for two point masses m1m_1 and m2m_2. (i) Derive an expression for the slope SS of this graph in terms of GG, m1m_1 and m2m_2. (ii) The original slope is S0S_0. Predict the new slope S1S_1 if m1m_1 is made three times larger while m2m_2 is simultaneously reduced to one-half of its original value. Express S1S_1 in terms of S0S_0. (iii) Explain physically why the shape of the graph remains unchanged even though its slope alters.
