Problem
(a) Define the temperature coefficient of resistivity of a conductor.
(b) Explain, on the basis of electron–lattice interactions, why the electrical resistance of a typical metal increases with rise in temperature, whereas that of an intrinsic semiconductor decreases.
(c) Two wires, one of copper and the other of carbon, are taken at the same room temperature. Predict, with reasons, which one will exhibit a larger change in resistance when both are heated by the same amount. No calculation is required.
