Problem
A rifle of mass 5kg fires a bullet of mass 0.02kg. The bullet leaves the barrel with a speed of 400m/s. Assume the bullet starts from rest inside the barrel and the time taken to travel through the barrel is 0.01s.
(a) Calculate the recoil velocity of the rifle just after the bullet is fired.
(b) Determine the magnitude of the average force exerted by the rifle on the bullet while it is in the barrel.
(c) State the magnitude and direction of the force exerted by the bullet on the rifle during the same interval.
