Problem

A bimetallic strip consists of a brass strip and an invar strip, each 10 cm long at 0 °C and rigidly joined side by side. For brass, the coefficient of linear expansion is 1.9×10−5 K−11.9\times10^{-5}\,\text{K}^{-1}, and for invar it is 1.0×10−6 K−11.0\times10^{-6}\,\text{K}^{-1}. The strip is heated to 100 °C. (i) Calculate the increase in length of the brass strip. (ii) Calculate the increase in length of the invar strip. (iii) Determine by how much one strip projects beyond the other at 100 °C. (iv) State which metal projects and justify your answer with a calculation.
