Problem
Two infinitely long, straight conductors are parallel to each other and extend vertically along the y-axis. Conductor 1 lies on the line x = 0 and carries a steady current of 6.0 A directed upward. Conductor 2 lies on the line x = 0.060 m and carries an identical current of 6.0 A directed downward.
Three observation points are defined in the plane z = 0:
• Point A is located at (0.030 m, 0).
• Point B is located at (0.090 m, 0).
• Point C is located at (0.030 m, 0.040 m).
Assume the region is otherwise free of currents and external magnetic fields.
(1) For each of the three points, describe the direction of the net magnetic field produced by the two conductors. Express each direction verbally (e.g., "into the page," "out of the page," "toward +y," etc.) and justify your answer qualitatively.
(2) Rank the magnitudes of the net magnetic field at points A, B, and C from largest to smallest. Provide a clear justification based on geometric reasoning.
(3) A small compass is placed at point A. Describe the expected orientation of the compass needle when it reaches equilibrium and explain your reasoning.
