Problem

A deuteron (md=3.34×10−27 kgm_d = 3.34 \times 10^{-27}\,\text{kg}, q=1.60×10−19 Cq = 1.60 \times 10^{-19}\,\text{C}) is accelerated from rest in a device where it moves in a plane perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field of 1.2 T1.2\,\text{T}. It leaves the magnetic field region when its orbit attains a radius of 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m}. The potential difference across the acceleration gap is 1.2 kV1.2\,\text{kV} each time the particle crosses it. (i) Calculate the kinetic energy of the deuteron on exit, in \text{MeV}. (ii) Determine approximately how many complete revolutions the deuteron makes before it exits.
