Problem

A hiker starts from point A, walks 9 km due east to point B, then turns at right angles and walks 12 km due north to point C. (i) Calculate the length of the straight path that would take the hiker directly back from C to A. (ii) Instead, the hiker plans to walk straight from C to a point D that lies 5 km due east of A, and then directly back to A. Determine the total distance CD + DA.
