Problem

A labourer presses a shovel blade into hard clay by applying a force of 500 N500\,\text{N} along the handle. The handle makes an angle of 60∘60^\circ with the normal to the blade. The part of the blade in contact with the clay can be considered a rectangle of area 150 cm2150\,\text{cm}^2. (i) Find the component of the applied force that is normal to the blade. (ii) Calculate the pressure exerted on the clay. (iii) The clay cracks if the pressure on it exceeds 2.0×106 Pa2.0\times10^{6}\,\text{Pa}. State with calculation whether the clay will crack under the given conditions.
