Problem

A satellite of mass mm moves in a circular orbit of variable radius rr about a planet of mass MM (m≪Mm \ll M). (i) Write the expressions for its kinetic energy K(r)K(r), potential energy U(r)U(r) and total mechanical energy E(r)E(r) as functions of rr. (ii) By differentiating your expression for E(r)E(r), obtain an expression for the infinitesimal change in total mechanical energy dE\mathrm{d}E when the orbital radius is increased by an amount dr\mathrm{d}r. (iii) Hence show that the work that must be supplied to slowly raise the orbit from radius rr to r+Δrr+\Delta r (with Δr≪r\Delta r \ll r) is approximately GMm2r2 Δr\dfrac{GMm}{2r^{2}}\,\Delta r. (iv) Discuss qualitatively how this result explains why successively higher orbits require progressively less additional energy per unit increase in radius.
