Problem
A cylindrical space probe of total mass 600kg is drifting at rest with respect to a distant reference frame in deep space. Small explosive bolts then separate the probe cleanly into two identical halves. External influences such as gravity and radiation pressure are negligible during the brief separation event.
(a) Explain whether the position of the system’s center of mass changes during and immediately after the separation. Include a clear verbal description of its motion, if any.
(b) Just after the explosion, describe the motion of the two halves relative to the original rest frame. In your answer, discuss both the directions of motion and the relationship between their speeds.
(c) Internal chemical energy stored in the explosive bolts is converted into mechanical energy of the two halves. Without performing numerical calculations, argue whether the total kinetic energy of the system must be greater than, less than, or equal to its value before the separation. Justify your conclusion thoroughly.
