Problem
Design an experiment, using only a battery, a rheostat, a long straight wire, a magnetic compass, a metre scale, and connecting leads, to verify that the magnitude of deflection of a compass needle depends on (i) the current in the wire and (ii) the perpendicular distance of the compass from the wire.
(i) Draw a neat labelled diagram of the arrangement you would set up.
(ii) Outline a stepwise procedure, mentioning the quantities that must be kept constant while one variable is changed at a time.
(iii) State the observations you would record and explain how they would confirm both dependences mentioned above.
