Problem

A rectangular park in a school has its centre chosen as the origin (0,0)(0,0) of a coordinate grid (units in metres). While jogging one evening, a student records his path as the sequence of points P(6,8)P(6,8), Q(−4,8)Q(-4,8), R(−4,−5)R(-4,-5) and S(6,−5)S(6,-5) in this order. Answer the following questions about the recorded points. (a) Determine the quadrant or axis location of each point P, Q, RP,\,Q,\,R and SS. Give reasons for each answer. (b) List the segments among PQ, QR, RSPQ,\,QR,\,RS and SPSP that cross either of the coordinate axes. Name the axis (or axes) crossed by each such segment and justify your answer with reference to the coordinates of the end-points. (c) Does the entire jogging path remain confined to exactly two quadrants? Give a detailed justification based on the positions obtained in part (a).
