Problem

A 0.10 M0.10\,\text{M} solution of acetic acid, CH3COOH\mathrm{CH_3COOH}, is prepared at 25  ∘C25\;^{\circ}\text{C}. Parts (a) Write the balanced proton-transfer equation that occurs between CH3COOH\mathrm{CH_3COOH} and liquid water. (b) In the equation from part (a), label each reactant and product as either the acid, the base, the conjugate acid, or the conjugate base. (c) Explain, citing relevant chemical reasoning, why water functions as a base rather than as an acid in this system. (d) Suppose instead that solid sodium acetate, NaCH3COO\mathrm{NaCH_3COO}, is dissolved in pure water to the same concentration. Write and label the principal proton-transfer reaction that now occurs and explain how the role of water differs from that in part (a).
