Problem

One end of a cylindrical rod of unknown metal, length 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} and diameter 2.0×10−2 m2.0\times10^{-2}\,\text{m}, is kept in contact with boiling water at 100 ∘C100\,^{\circ}\text{C} while the other end is embedded in a large block of ice at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\text{C}. In steady state, the rod melts 5.4×10−2 kg5.4\times10^{-2}\,\text{kg} of ice in 10 min10\,\text{min}. The latent heat of fusion of ice is 3.36×105 J kg−13.36\times10^{5}\,\text{J}\,\text{kg}^{-1}. (i) Calculate the rate of heat flow along the rod. (ii) Determine the thermal conductivity of the metal. (iii) Name one common metal whose thermal conductivity is of the same order of magnitude as the value obtained.
